Do you usually connect through the browser?
Or what client are you using?

Mibbit is still a webclient, its just one that uses ajax instead of a java applet. Mibbit is okay in a pinch but its also slightly evil in the way it can spy on you. Get a real client.. a program you install on your computer dedicated for IRC. Like the windows xchat version.
The reason why the applet wasn't working for you now is probably because java has security issues. Modern browsers will try to disable some horrible plugins if you don't have the latest version and java is riddled with holes.
So again, get a real client. Xchat has been tested by thousands of people for a long long time. The last exploit in it that I remember caused it to crash but that was many moons ago. You can consider it safe.
When you get on irc with it I'll walk you through setting it up properly.

Xchat->network list:
add: 'hackthissite'
edit:
change newserver/6667 to irc.hackthissite.org/7000 (hit enter when you make changes)
select "autoconnect to this network on startup"
select "use ssl for all servers on this network"
select "accept invalid ssl certificate" (although it shouldn't be needed, our cert is valid)
close
connect

alternatively type /server -ssl irc.hackthissite.org 7000

also in that network tab in the "connection command" box type: LOAD -e c:\\somedir\hts.txt
or however directories work on windows(remember to hit enter!).
create the file hts.txt in c:\\somedir\
in that file put the following:
Code: Select all
/ns identify <yourpassword>
/timer 2 join #coffeesh0p

And save it.
If done correctly, you will automatically connect to the hts network when you start xchat, you will automatically identify with nickserv and you will join the channel #coffeesh0p 2 seconds after that.
You can add other commands to do at startup in that file from now on or join more channels on startup for instance by changing #coffeesh0p to #cofffeesh0p,#hackthissite
