You're forgetting something. All I'll say (and I hope this isn't a spoiler) that it's all in where you're looking for the files when you're typing....just think about what directory you're in.

Now for my problem. I don't think anyone ever completely explained the hash problem. I'm getting (like others I've seen) (and this is only an example):

name:h2h38....$ha82h394hidk/hie9

I can't put that directly into cain, cause it's not 16 bytes. Is there actual parts of the hash missing, or is this how it's supposed to look?

-- Thu Apr 23, 2009 7:59 am --

Also, I've read a lot of posts about Cain not being able to "unhash" this password. What can I use (other than JTR) to do it, on either an Ubuntu system or Vista (so much hate.... )?

I'd rather not go downloading 20 different crackers when one will do it.

<sarcasm> Plus, the whole "virus" thing could be a bit of a downer </sarcasm>

HTS tries to get you familiar with many different tools for various things. JTR works on this one and by reading through all of the posts in this forum you will find a lot of tips and suggestions on using it.

It is available for Ubuntu, but I've had issues using it that I don't want to go into here, simply cause it's not entirely relevant.

I'm going to try and reinstall it for Ubuntu and hopefully get it running.

If not, well, that's a whole lot of my fault, but I'd appreciate an alternative.

[EDIT]:

I got it running, but now I'm having other problems that other people (I think if I read right) were having. Everytime I try to load the hash into JTR, it says "no password hashes loaded", unless I leave the user name in it, then it kicks back

guesses: 0 time: 0:00:00:00 100% c/s: 1870 trying: A************59

which isn't right. And still the issue of the ... in the middle of the code.

(If I sound whiny, I'm sorry, but I've been at this one for a few hours now, and I'm a little frustrated)

I am having an issue with JTR on Windows 7. Every time I try to run it I get an "Access Denied" message in the cmd window (as shown below).

C:\Users\Daryl\Desktop\hts\johntheripper\run>john-386 real7.txt

The "real7.txt" is the file that I copied the hash into. Does anyone know how to get it to work? I will keep trying with another program, but I would still like to know how to get around this problem. Also some people said they used C&A for this mission. How did you get it to work?

The point of doing these missions is to learn.
Only YOU can figure out what type of hash it is.

*** P.S. I recommend JTR to crack the hash for this mission.

When using JTR yes, it should be in that format.

Make sure that the hash.txt file is in the /john/run/ directory and that it's the complete hash blah:blah

Ahh..... I got it. Here's what my problem was:

I was worried about making things much harder than they were. You know that the php gets the file. Just think about where all of the files are located. Map it out in your head, or draw a hierarchy even. Are the files war.txt and bush.txt in the current directory? What directory do you want to get to? And what file in that directory do you want to read.

You must know where you are before you go anywhere.

PS->Thanks for all the help, everyone. I love this site.
