Alternatively, I think it could be fun to explore the possibility of completely avoiding a linear progression of missions. "Here's a vulnerable box. Do what you want with it," so to speak.

So basically there will be a system with some services installed. the only thing to be done then is to configure them so that they are vulnerable to some degree?

just a little idea: maybe the solution or the concept of the exploit could be accessed AFTER you solved it (don't know how but anyway). There are several reasons why this would not be stupid. for once you can work with tools, master the practical aspect and then learn about the theory later. because some exploits are very hard to understand and for those it's more important to know how to use them, not how they work in every little detail.
