Yes, true, but there's really no such thing as a expensive software or a free software this time and age with p2p and so on.
Mac will however be more costly on the hardware, that's why i used the European car analogy :)

Don't forget... Linux makes your penis at least twice as big. (1.5 times if you use Ubuntu)

about that cygwin thing,
it's much easier to learn in the actual linux enviroment, when you have some practical application for the terminal commands and what not,
say I have downloaded a new module for python it is in an archive and I need root privileges to extract to the python directory, or extract it in my home folder and copy it to the python directory with root privileges etc...

You can extract your stuff and download your stuff with cygwin easily. The command prompt for windows even. (Just set up your path enviroment variable) But why would you need to do that when you have GUI?
