I don't know how many of you are flight inthusiests but this is the coolest thing since sliced bread
Just buy any usb tv dongle that has a RTL2832U chip and
git clone https://github.com/MalcolmRobb/dump1090.git dump1090
you can view real time flight data from up to 100 of k's/miles away, depending on the signal and it even provides a web interface.
I've got a set up at http://colision.info:20000 and nc'ing the raw hex data at http://colision.info/flight_data (the dns records might become invalid and I'll edit this)
I don't know how to parse the raw packets yet but once i get around to it, gonna try and build some 3d flight paths and time lapse it ;)

Greetings Sir, (and others listening in),
I have just gotten the cheap dongle from China and it works like a charm!

Also i am going to use it to listen in to law enforcement radio, which use
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terrestrial_Trunked_Radio , there are some
exciting programs for that purpose!

Nice bro :D I thought about that but was thinking 100% the data is encrypted, it would be interesting to decode arbitrary data from random frequencies tho. A colleague of mine suggested I try and make a cheap radio telescope. It's a bit beyond my hardware skill set, frequency shifting/amplification and maybe using servos to keep it aimed at a spot in the sky. If that's up your alley look into, look into the hydrogen line
