why won't monitor mode work for wireshark

What's the best way to setup a home network? Why should I care about BGP?

([msg=94005]see why won't monitor mode work for wireshark[/msg])

I'm trying to learn to use wireshark to sniff packets on my home network. The problem is I tried turning on monitor with command line captures nothing. I cannot get http packets to appear on wireshark, or anything at all frankly. This is troubling me because I expect monitor mode to work.

Here's what I've tried:

Code: Select all
adam@adam-Inspiron-5558:~$ sudo airmon-ng start wlp6s0
[sudo] password for adam:

Found 5 processes that could cause trouble.
If airodump-ng, aireplay-ng or airtun-ng stops working after
a short period of time, you may want to kill (some of) them!

PID   Name
965   avahi-daemon
1003   avahi-daemon
1068   NetworkManager
1475   wpa_supplicant
2790   dhclient
Process with PID 2790 (dhclient) is running on interface wlp6s0

Interface   Chipset      Driver

wlp6s0      Intel AC   iwlwifi - [phy0]
            (monitor mode enabled on mon0)

At that point, I go into wireshark and only see this:

My attempt at an http capture on Ubuntu using mon0 (monitor mode)

So then, that said, I even have this to prove it is in monitor mode:

So then, why isn't monitor mode capturing http packets? Could someone help me with this? Thanks so much.

I've tried it on a pen testing network I'm allowed to practice on and on my home network. I looked up other solutions but I only found someone who asked a similar question and got the answer of me putting it into monitor mode, which doesn't seem to be the right answer.

He used wlan0 rather than wlp6s0. I don't know if this matters, and I can't imagine it would because I thought both wlan0 and wlp6s0 did the same thing on different Linux OSs.

Any ideas?
