Where do I start?

I'm currently working through the basic missions and trying to learn as much as I can but I have some questions for the more experienced people out there. Where do I learn more about hacking? I want to be a white hat in the future and I would like to learn as much as I can before I head off to college. Sites or books works. I'm already looking at The Shellcoder's Handbook vol. 2 which I believe will be helpful but anything helps.

If you don't already know C and assembly, I would start there. Hacking is about thinking outside the box and circumventing your limits, but if you don't know where those limits are then what can you do, you know?

Learn C the Hard Way is a great book for that because it teaches you not only how to program in C but also why you do certain things, the answer usually being so that your program doesn't get broken.

Thank you! I'm new to the whole hacking community so having someone answer my question within a day is great. Truly, thank you. My gratitude is unending.

Once you've practiced a bit with C & ASM, I'd recommend buying/borrowing the book "Hacking: The Art of Exploitation" by Jon Erickson; it covers the theory behind software exploits and has a tonne of sample code to get you actually using the theory.

Hacking: The Art of Exploitation is a great book. Definitely second that recommendation.

No problem, man, welcome. Let me know if you have any more questions.
