Hardware trojans

So, I found this blackhat talk that was pretty interesting. Seems it's easy enough to just add some extra hardware to a mouse or keyboard to get a way into a system. Yeah, it's not a new concept, but it's interesting that it's so easy to reproduce what the NSA did using simple hardware. It does require soldering and some knowledge however...

I knew a guy who had a virus where if a windows OS got infected, it would fry the hardware, the computer would never turn on again.

How is that possible?

Completely off topic (this is about hardware trojans, not software trojans), but I'll take a guess: BIOS firmware required to start the computer can be flashed to a different version, if it's badly coded it will break the system. Almost every device has firmware, so you could do the same with hard disks, disk drives, GPUs etc. And then there are the more common (back in the day anyway) master boot record viruses. Those infect the MBR of a hard disk, which sometimes (depending on what the virus actually does and how well it was coded) makes it impossible to start the system without fixing the MBR or doing a complete reformat of the drive.
